Introduction to Character our Motives In this session, we will discover the link between our character, behavior, motives, and identity. This is one of two foundational sessions.
What is character? Character = behavior + motives. Motives are internal and hidden. Behavior is external and visible. When we are under pressure, character is usually revealed through our behavior. God knows our motives, even if they’re hidden from ourselves or others.
The foundations of character Instead of orphans, we are sons and daughters of a loving Father. Our whole identity changes with our adoption in salvation. Our new identity also changes our motivations. Orphans are motivated by fear of rejection, abandonment, and insecurity, while those who view themselves as sons or daughters are motivated by love. Good character is not an outcome of trying harder, but of security in our identity as beloved children of God. Do you see yourself as an orphan or as a son/daughter of God? This is an important question.
How to develop character Because of Christ, we have hope. We can change. We can put off our old self and put on our new self. We shouldn’t be discouraged if we are stuck in behavior that shows poor character. Christ has given us hope by giving us a new identity as His sons and daughters. Our motives can be transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit, so we are no longer controlled by fear but by love. Rejoice! We are no longer slaves but sons and daughters of the Most High.
