In this 90 minute introductory training session, we will begin to understand what spiritual disciplines are and their importance for our spiritual formation as followers of Jesus.
What are spiritual disciplines? A spiritual discipline is a Biblical practice that helps us draw near to God and grow in our devotion to Him. The Bible gives examples of these disciplines which include prayer (Matthew 6:5-13), meditation (Psalm 19:14), and fasting (Matthew 6:16-18). The spiritual disciplines require self-discipline and training to make them life-giving habits in our lives. (1 Timothy 4:7-8).
Why do we practice spiritual disciplines? The spiritual disciplines make our spiritual roots deep and strong. They position us for God to transform us (Romans 12:1-2). They are practical ways we can connect with God. The spiritual disciplines are key to abiding in Christ. The disciplines allow us to have an intimate relationship with our creator.
How do we apply them to our lives? Choose one spiritual discipline. Just start - the longest journey begins with a single step. Small steps - start your journey gradually. Seek a mentor who can suggest resources or give advice from their personal experience. Find an accountability partner or group.
This introductory session has 8 in-depth training sessions for each Spiritual Discipline introduced here. They can be run in any order.
