Wholeness of Spirit - Sabbath and Rest

In this 90 minute Training session, we will discover why Sabbath and rest are so important to the rhythms of an individual and a community.

What is Sabbath and rest? Sabbath comes from the Hebrew verb sabat, which means to cease, keep, or stop. The Jews observed the Sabbath, based on the fourth commandment God gave: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” (Exodus 20:8, NIV). Today, the Sabbath is commonly used as an intentional time set aside to find rest in God. Most people live very busy lives and do not incorporate Sabbath and rest into their normal rhythm. Exodus 20:8-11

Why observe the Sabbath and rest?        God established the Sabbath and gave us an example.        God wants us to trust Him.        We avoid idolatry when we take a Sabbath. In many cultures, the idea of overworking can be idolized. Sabbath helps us fight this temptation.        The Sabbath is a gift from God for people. It permits us to take time out of our busy schedules.        The Sabbath strengthens our intimacy with God.        Sabbath helps build our relationship with others. Genesis 2:2, Hebrews 4:9-11, Mark 2:27-28

How do we observe the Sabbath and rest?        Schedule some time without work or other obligations. There is no one set model or pattern for how to observe the Sabbath. God’s invitation to rest is not about having a perfect formula. Don’t be “religious” about it. Worship, pray, and meditate on the Word of God.        Rest in community with others to nurture relationships.        Sabbath refills us and better equips us to serve those we work with and interact with on a day-to-day basis. Mark 4:35-41, Luke 13:10-17, Luke 14:1-6
